MohameI identified a novel genetic machinery that can render cells and organisms resilient to mutations, whereby in response to a mutation in a given gene, cells increase the production of other functionally-related compensating genes that can take over the function of the mutated gene. Thereby, avoid developing defects/diseases, a phenomenon that we termed: genetic compensation. He identified the molecular process triggering such response to be the degradation of the mutant mRNA, and further described details on the mechanism.
