A Young Chinese Community of Innovators and Pioneers

Since 1999,  MIT Technology Review has identified young innovators doing exciting work that could shape their fields for decades. Recognizing the rise of Chinese technology talent, the magazine decided to launch a 35 Innovators Under 35 specifically for China in May of 2017. This list is a collaboration between MIT Technology Review in Cambridge and our Chinese partners, TR China. It gathers the young Chinese who could revolutionize our lifestyles and shape the future of technology and industry.

Recognition by MIT Technology Review gives these young people a platform to present themselves and their achievements to industry leaders, academic experts, and the global public. Each year, brilliant technologists are recognized for their advancements in diverse technical fields including biotechnology and medicine, computer and electronics hardware, software, internet, artificial intelligence, robotics, telecommunications, nanotechnology and materials, energy, and transportation, etc.

Meet the 2022 Innovators Under 35 of China

The 2022 Innovators Under 35 China have been selected by a committee of judges. The honorees come from various backgrounds: researchers from academic institutions, and entrepreneurs from startups and tech giants. What they have in common is that they are developing new projects that will change all areas of society, and they are disrupting our current and future way of living and making the world a better one. The thirty-five innovators are selected from five different categories: entrepreneurs, humanitarian, pioneers, visionaries, and inventors.

Ming-Cheng CHEN

He and his team have challenged the Extended Church-Turing Thesis through the demonstration of quantum computational advantage.

Shi CHEN

She built a comprehensive assessment model for Photovoltaic (PV) power based on spatial big data, which offers support for the optimized development of PV power from technical, economic, grid, and environmental dimensions.

Xiao CHEN

She established a method to study the sub-nanoscale local structure of molecular sieves and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and in-situ observation of the confined molecular dynamics behaviors under the ultra-low electron dose, which has pioneered the study of confined small molecule dynamics behaviors.

Chaoqun DANG

She achieved ultralarge and uniform elastic strain of diamond up to 10% by the development of micro/nanomechanical testing, which can fundamentally modulate its electronic band structure, suggesting potential microelectronics applications for wide-bandgap semiconductors.

Liang FENG

He designed a new adsorption mode that is the first major fundamental advance in surface chemistry since physisorption and chemisorption were observed in the 1930s, providing a transformative approach to control surface and interfacial chemistry.

Yue GAO

His findings demonstrate effective regulations of battery interface chemistry using organic materials, which is the key challenge for current battery technology and provides the organic regulation concept for battery research.

Lili HAN

She established the largest library of single-atom catalysts for the first time, and unified principles based on the properties have been uncovered, which not only deepens the understanding of the nature of active sites in diverse single-atom catalysts, but also lays a theoretical foundation for the design and synthesis of high-performance single-atom catalysts.

Yimo HAN

Her research starts from the most basic atomic structure and properties and follows the bottom-up research concept to solve problems in related fields, which will provide the most fundamental scientific basis for future applications and promote the development and innovation of electron microscopy technology and material science.

Guangwei HU

He unveiled the novel nanophotonic science and technology that couples different physics and covers from visible, mid-infrared and terahertz ranges, which will lead to next-generation ultrathin ultracompact, high-integrated, and multi-functional diffraction optical elements and on-chip photonic systems.

Han HU

Invented a novel computer vision neural network named Swin Transformer, that promotes a shift of visual architectures from the classical convolutional neural networks (CNN) to visual Transformers, and makes machines see the visual world in the same way they understand language.

Quanyin HU

He for the first time put forward a drug delivery concept by leveraging endogenous platelets as the delivery platform and developed a series of platelet-based drug delivery strategies for various disease treatments.

Yuanwei LIU

His research contributions on next generation multiple access (NGMA) and simultaneously transmitting and reflecting surface (STARS) provide fundamental theories for improving communication performance and connectivity, reducing operational costs, and enabling multi-functional integration of future wireless networks. The utilization of these cutting-edge technologies is expected to facilitate sustainable, ubiquitous and green 6G wireless networks.

Zhaochu LUO

By exploiting the built-in non-volatile memory and magnetic coupling in nanomagnets, he realized in-memory computation devices, offering a new route to solve the von Neumann bottleneck problem in conventional computers.

Dongxin MA

She deepened the understanding of reduced-dimensional metal halide perovskite crystallization, and developed a new class of organic molecular additives to fabricate perovskite films with reduced trap density and monodispersed distribution, therefore achieving light-emitting diodes with record-high performance.

Jun MAO

The Mg3Bi2-based alloy he discovered possesses superior thermoelectric performance, better mechanical properties, and lower cost and is the only candidate potential for replacing the commercial n-type Bi2Te3-based materials that have been used for more than seven decades.

Chun SO

He uncovered the long-sought molecular mechanism underlying frequent chromosome missegregations in human eggs and proposed a therapeutic strategy that can be implemented in fertility clinics.

Longzhi TAN

He created the next generation of single-cell multi-omic toolkits that span the fields of genomics, neuroscience, biochemistry, and computer science to develop 3D genome-based treatment for developmental and degenerative disorders.

He TIAN

He invented the world's smallest gate length transistor, promoting the further development of Moore's law down to the sub-1 nanometer level and providing a reference basis for the application of two-dimensional thin films in future integrated circuits.

Cheng WANG

He challenged the technical limit of quantum metrology, and generated original, disruptive, valuable products like Chip-Scale Molecular Clocks and Cryogenic CMOS integrated circuits.

Hongze WANG

He made fundamental contributions to the understanding of the relationship among laser manufacturing process, microstructure of the material, and performance of the structures, promoting the mass industrial application of this new technology.

Yajie WANG

She developed a couple of novel light-driven cooperative chemoenzymatic systems comprised of photosensitized energy transfer reactions, photoinduced electron transfer reactions with an enzymatic reduction in one-pot to stereoconvergently reduce E/Z mixtures of alkenes or the unreactive stereoisomers of alkenes to enantioenriched products in high yields.

Yongcheng WANG

He used novel chemistry methods to break through the application limitations of high-throughput single-cell sequencing technology, not only greatly improved the detection sensitivity, but also significantly expanded the scope of sample, and further expanded the clinical application scenarios of single-cell sequencing technology.

Chao XIANG

He developed the first single-chip laser soliton microcomb, which breaks the limitation of incompatible material systems and produces high-performance, highly-integrated, integrated electronic-photonic integrated circuits with high-volume and low-cost.

Minpeng XU

He developed a novel technique to detect miniature brain potentials as small as 0.5 μV in amplitude, promoting the brain-computer interface technology that could be applied in the fields of manned spaceflight, rehabilitation medicine and consumer electronics.

Wei YAN

He integrated sophisticated electronic and optoelectronic devices into fibers, developed important technologies such as intelligent acoustic clothing, fiber sensing and imaging, and fiber brain-machine interfaces, providing unique solutions for health monitoring, personalized medicine, analysis of the causes of nervous system diseases, and space safety monitoring.

Jie YANG

By developing Mega-electron-volt ultrafast electron diffraction (MeV-UED) technology, he manages to achieve atomic spatiotemporal resolution and direct observation of molecular structural transformations.

Yi YANG

He studied free-electron-light interaction at the nanoscale, indicating its huge application potentials for novel radiation sources, biomedical imaging and therapy, and quantum optics technologies.

Yonggang YAO

He developed “electrified high-temperature synthesis and manufacturing” technology that diminished the carbon footprint of material synthesis and chemical manufacturing, enabling higher efficiency, low-carbon economy, and sustainability.

Shaoliang YU

He proposed the innovative idea of integrating 3D micro-scale freeform surfaces onto the 2D photonic chips, leading to a new class of universal interfacing architecture for photonic chips and boosting the optical bandwidth.

Yakun YUAN

He invented new methods of physical-model-based computational imaging with advanced electromagnetic probes that could expand our horizon of perceiving the world.

Zhitao ZHANG

Through material design, he developed flexible light-emitting polymers with lower cost and higher performance for building next-generation, flexible, stretchable, high-resolution light-emitting skin.

Yuqing ZHENG

She created a direct photolithography patterning method for polymeric electronic materials based on "PhotoAssist" system, which empowers the construction of the largest elastic circuits and transistor arrays with over two orders of magnitude enhancement in density, thanks to the high-yield and high-uniformity properties of “PhotoAssist”. This new micro-manufacturing strategy offers the possibility for building complex elastic circuits with bio-signal collecting and processing abilities in skin-like electronics and will lead to a paradigm-shift in flexible electronics fabrication.

Haoxin ZHOU

He developed fabrication techniques that reliably produce ultra-clean devices, and on these devices, he observed novel electron magnetism and spin-polarized superconductivity.

Jiamin ZHU

He developed a high temperature superconductor of high engineering current density and materialized its commercial mass production, making significant contribution to the development of fusion technology, enabling practical fusion reactors.

Yilong ZOU

He identified the molecular mechanisms underlying cancer’s unique vulnerability to ferroptosis, and developed ferroptosis inducers and reporters for manipulating this pathway, which will potentially facilitate the development of novel anti-cancer therapeutics.
