An anesthesiologist himself, Carles García has often witnessed the deleterious effects of postdural puncture headaches (PDPH), a common side-effect of spinal anesthesia and lumbar punctures that may occur after the incorrect application of an epidural. A constant observer of the unnecessary suffering caused by this ailment, Carles García was inspired to create Duralock, a medical device which approaches the problem of PDPH by closing the dura mater tears which cause it from a new and innovative angle. His invention has the potential to help the one million patients who suffer from PDPH every year, while simultaneously reducing the cost burdens borne by hospitals in the form of extended hospital stays and analgesic drugs for these patients.
